Exploring National Digital Health Strategies in Europe

April 22, 2024

The WHO’s latest report offers an in-depth look at how European countries are incorporating digital technologies into their healthcare systems. With data from April to October 2022, the report titled “Exploring the digital health landscape in the WHO European Region: digital health country profiles,” provides insights into each country’s digital health advancements and practices.

The findings reflect a varied digital health landscape, driven in large part by the urgency and innovation stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The document serves a dual purpose of both assessing current strategies and providing groundwork for the regional digital health action plan that will span from 2023 to 2030. This plan is dedicated to accelerating the digital transformation of health services across Europe.

Digital Divide and Developmental Needs

Despite the progress, the report identifies a distinct digital divide within the region. It notes that only about half of the countries have established policies specifically aimed at improving digital health literacy. This discrepancy highlights the need for targeted efforts to eliminate barriers and ensure equitable access to digital health resources.

Furthermore, the report emphasizes that continuous innovation and support are essential for nations to successfully navigate their unique digital health journeys. By offering individualized country profiles, the WHO seeks to promote mutual learning and guide innovative approaches tailored to the specific needs and capabilities of each member state. The ultimate goal is to close the existing digital health gap and foster widespread adoption of digital health solutions, making healthcare more accessible and efficient for everyone.
